- So, how does this work?

The epidermal hair follicles are regulated by interactions between mesenchymal and epithelial cells and undergo cycles of growth (anagen), involution (catagen), and quiescence (telogen). The most obvious force in the cycle is the follicular mesenchyme, in particular the dermal papilla. Factors from the papillary mesenchyme act as inductive signals for cycling of the follicular epithelium (Peus & Pittelkow 1996). Epithelial stem cells, which reside in the bulge area of the hair follicles, can respond to the inductive signal from the dermal papilla (Cotsarelis et al. 1990). This activation leads to proliferation of stem cells in the bulge area, and then the stem cell progeny forms a down-growth into the deep dermis, followed by differentiative growth of matrix cells and generation of the complex follicular product, the shaft, and its housing sheath.

In simple language, that means certain growth factors, hitherto unknown, have been believed to cause growth of hair in human beings. Our group, led by Dr. R.M. Singh and Dr. Rinky Kapoor, in a landmark research, has identified one such growth factor, prepared this revolutionary new molecule artificially in the laboratory and has conducted trials which have shown great results in hair growth on injection of this growth factor.
